SIGN-UP FOR THE EIGHT BALL FALL TOURNAMENT
A couple reasons: firstly, so people don't think we go swimming; but there's also more to billiards than just pool!
Whereas the term "billiards" originally implied a specific type of game akin to but different from pool, which we now call carom or carom billiards, It has since become a catch all term to describe the overarching group of what we could technically be more accurate in calling "cue sports". While we only have pool tables on campus at the moment, we one day hope to bring other billiard games to campus as well!
Alas, you have stumbled upon our never ending struggle. Since the Billiards Club's inception, we've always had a major problem with cue vandalism in the game room. We put out fresh cues in the game room whenever we can and when needed, but no matter what we do, most cues are broken within about two weeks, and all are typically broken within a month of being placed in the game room. Our members always take great care of equipment and some have even personally donated fresh cues to the game room. Not a single cue has ever been broken during one of our events or meetings. The damage is most likely the result of negligence and misuse of the cues by those wishing to horseplay in the game room. We typically remove broken cues from the game room when we spot them because continuing to play with a broken cue can cause further damage to billiard balls and the table cloth.
We are constantly trying new strategies and methods for protecting the game room cues and equipment. In the meantime, if you see any abuse of the cues or any other piece of game room equipment, we highly encourage you to politely interject and put a stop to it or report it to public safety.
We're glad you asked! There is no obligation or duties for being a regular club member! All we ask is that you come to our meetings and tournaments when you can, and have fun! You can be as involved or not as you like.
No worries! Students of all skill levels are more than welcome to join! Even if you've never held a pool cue in your life, we love to help educate and improve each other's skills and techniques! We are a friendly, nonjudgmental environment, we want everyone to feel free to ask for guidance and pointers! Our more practiced members are always happy to coach newcomers to success!
Nope! Though many of our members do have their own cues, it's not required at all! The club is happy to lend members cues to use during meetings! Most of our club members are even happy to lend their personal cues to other club members too!
It is not uncommon for new members to join the club, realize how much they enjoy it, and eventually get their own cue!
Our weekly meetings are very relaxed. Members play casually with others while those waiting to play socialize, relax, or get school work done. Sometimes members will arrange a spontaneous "mini tournament" during our regular meetings. If there's any club business to discuss or announcements to be made, they're done in a causal open discussion environment. Better equipment than what is usually available in the CC is also used during our meetings.
In a word, fun! Every tournament we hold is unique but all are open to all students of any skill level! Even if you don't know how to play the game, all rules are explained at the start. Then, players are called to the tables when it's time for their matches and the tournament progress can be watched on the leaderboard.
Yes! If you can't find a partner/teammates or would prefer to be on a random team, All doubles and teams tournaments hosted by the club allow you to sign up as an individual! Before matches begin during the tournament, you can either find a partner amongst the crowd, or be randomly paired up with another solo entrant.
The rules may very depending on the tournament in this case. We generally permit those who are certain they wish to go it alone to do so, however we typically discourage it as it tends not to be in the spirit of most tournaments.
