The winner of the costume contest shall receive their own pool cue of approx. $50 Value! See costume contest rules bellow.
GAME & FORMAT
Cut-Throat is a unique game in that it features three players facing off in a 1v1v1 format. Each player is assigned a set of five balls within the rack: lows 1-5, mids 6-10, and highs 11-15. A player's ball set can be thought of like their "lives". The goal is to pocket the balls of other players and to be the last one standing with at least one of their own balls left on the table. Should a player scratch the cue ball, one of each of thier opponent's balls are returned to the table, even if one of those players was already eliminated.
Felt Night Fright 2026 will take place in the form of a chip tournament. At the beginning each player will start with 3 points or "chips". Players will face off against those of a similar skill rating in their matches. Each of the two losing players from a match will lose one chip each while the winning player's chip count remains unaffected. Losing all of one's chips will eliminate them from the tournament. Players will continue to face off against those of similar rating and current chip count until one player is left standing and declared the winner!
Since games of Cut-Throat can go on indefinetly if players keep scratching, a match timer of 10 minutes will start upon the break. If this time expires the match will then have 5 minutes of overtime where no balls will be returned to the table. Should a match run out of overtime, it will enter sudden death, where a scratch or foul will cause the offending player to lose the match.
COSTUME BONUS
In addition to the prize for best costume, all players wearing a costume will each be granted one free revival from elimination they may use during any non finals match!
Please note that participation in the costume contest is not required to compete in the tournament, but it is highly encouraged. What counts as a costume to recieve the free revival shall be adjudicated by touranment staff (i.e claiming to be wearing a costume but wearing ordinary clothing).
(Please note all times are approximations)
~ 5:30 CHECK-IN & REGISTRATION OPENS - When players arrive they must check-in at our competitor check-in desk. Those that signed up in advance, we just need to verify you're here, get you checked into our system, and get you your player badge. Walk-in participants that didn't sign-up in advance can also complete their registration at the check-in desk. The desk is usually open half an hour earlier than the tournament start time if you wish to arrive and check-in early.
Late registration is permitted until the first round of matches is complete.
~ 6:45 PLAYERS BREIFING - Once most competitors have been checked in, opening remarks will be given from club leadership. This will include a brief explanation of the tournament rules, how the tournament format will work, and any other useful bits of information for the night.
~ 7:00 MATCHES BEGIN - A schedule of matches for the first round will be posted on the club website and on the leaderboard screen in the game room. Players are expected to check-in for their match at the tournament administration desk at their scheduled time. Please keep an eye on the match schedule as times may be subject to change.
~ 8:30 FIRST ROUND ENDS & REGISTRATION CLOSES - All players will have competed in their first match, concluding the first round. Once the first round is complete, last minute tournament and costume contest registration closes. Matches continue into subsequent rounds and costume contest voting begins!
~ 10:00 COSTUME CONTEST WINNER ANNOUNCED - Final round of voting will conclude and the winner of the costume contest will be declared.
~ 11:00 FINAL MATCH BEGINS - The three finalist players will face off in the last match of the night.
CONTEST FORMAT
One must also be a competitor in the tournament to compete in the costume contest. All tournament competitors and any club members present with a registered club number are eligible to vote. The costume contest winner will be decided by a voting bracket. Each contestant will be seeded to a bracket against another contestant. Votes will be cast to decide who advances through the bracket until one contestant is declared the winner!
COSTUME REGULAITONS
We want participants to have as much freedom as possible when it comes to thier costumes. However we do still need to have a few ground rules to protect the tournament and club equipment, as well as uphold MSOE policy:
No costume shall be allowed to get in the way of the game or slow it down. If a part of one's costume interferes in any way with tournament matches, normal foul rules apply.
Costumes should not pose a safety risk to their wearer or others in attendance at the tournament. Make sure to have unobstructed vision and motion.
Keep props small and safe. No real or realistic-looking weapons. Props must stay off the pool tables.
Ones cue must be a normal, legal cue, not part of the costume or specially modified.
Costumes should be appropriate in an official college setting. No nudity, nothing hateful, offensive, or targeting of a real person or group. The MSOE Student Code of Conduct still applies.
Tournament staff reserves the right to ask a player to change or remove any part of a costume that breaks these rules or disrupts play. The decision of the tournament director is final.
Good sportsmanship applies to the costume contest just as it does for the tournament.
PARTICIPATION REQUIREMENTS
To participate in the costume contest, one must:
Compete in this tournament.
Be an MSOE Student. Guest players wearing a costume will still receive their one free revival from elimination but will not be entered into the competition. See our guest player policy in the fequently asked questions bellow.
Be present when the last round of voting begins and concludes. If a contestant still in the running has left the tournament before the final round of voting, it will be considered a forfeit.
Should a contestant win the contest but not be present when it is announced it is considered a forfeit and the runner up shall be declared the winner.
The more help we get the better our tournaments get! If you're looking for a way to contribute, and something to put on your resume, consider the following volunteer options available! Please note that one can both volunteer and play in the same tournament if you so choose!
Our tournament referees have the important job of enforcing match rules and decorum and resolving disputes. They keep the games fair and the matches moving. We can alway use more help with player check-in, bracket management, and photograpy as well!
If you are interested in volunteering for this tournament, please contact club President Steven Sniegowski via MS Teams as soon as possible.
WHAT ARE TOURNAMENTS LIKE?
In a word, fun! Every tournament we hold is unique but all are open to all students of any skill level! Even if you don't know how to play the game, all rules are explained at the start. Then, players are called to the tables when it's time for their matches and the tournament progress can be watched on the leaderboard.
IS THERE AN ENTRY FEE?
No! Our tournaments are free to those who wish to participate!
CAN I WATCH THE TOURANMENT EVEN IF I'M NOT PLAYING?
Absolutely! We encourage everyone to come and spectate our tournaments and cheer on your friends! Seating around the pool tables is available for all and typically a camera feed of each table for better viewing.
IS FOOD AND DRINK ALLOWED?
Per campus policy, food and drink is not allowed in the Campus Center Game Room. We enforce this rule during tournaments as we wish to keep the game room clean and orderly for all to use. If you wish to eat between your matches please make use of one of the tables outside of the game room. We do permit the exception of reusable drink canisters for water and such however these must be kept far away from the pool tables and must be sealed at all times when not being drank from. Players who attempt to bring in cafeteria plates, cups, and or other forms of open food or drink containers will be warned once. If they do not abide the warning or violate this rule a second time they will be ejected from the tournament.
HOW LONG DO TOURNAMENTS LAST?
This depends on many factors including the game being played, the amount of players we have and how focused they are. In general, our tournament start time is 6:00PM, though first matches generally begin around 6:45PM. We aim to have a declared winner by 11:00PM. This depends on numerous factors however like how long it takes for everyone to check-in, duration of matches, player turnout, etc.
WHAT IF I DON'T KNOW THE GAME RULES?
Don't worry! The rules of the tournament are always explained before the first matches begin during the player's breifing announcements. If you miss that, or have questions, ask our Chief Referee or Tournament Director. If you're in the middle of a match and are unsure of a rule, ask your table referee.
WHAT IF THERE IS A RULES DISPUTE/I HAVE A RULE DISPUTE?
If you believe a rule to be incorrect, incorrectly applied, or to have been violated, talk to your table referee. They will make a ruling on the matter. If you wish to dispute your table referee's ruling, request the Chief Referee or Tournament Director who's decision shall be final.
IS THERE A REGISTRATION DEADLINE?
Players are allowed to check-in or last-minute register until the end of the first round of matches. We greatly encourage those who plan on participating to sign up as early as possible because it helps us gauge event turnout and plan accordingly.
CAN NON-MSOE STUDENTS PARTICIPATE?
Please refer to the following:
College aged non-MSOE students (ages 18-30) are permitted to participate in doubles/teams tournaments so long as they are vouched for by a participating MSOE student. No team or doubles pairing may consist solely of non-MSOE participants.
College aged MSOE/Billiards Club Alumni (ages 18-30) are permitted to participate so long as they are vouched for by a current Billiards Club member.
MSOE/Billiards Club Alumni over the age of 30 are permitted to spectate and in some cases assist in the running of club tournaments so long as they are vouched for by a current club member or member of MSOE staff. They are not permitted to participate as competitors.
NOTE: All Non-MSOE student participants with the exception of MSOE/Billiards Club alumni are not permitted to receive prizes in the event they win a tournament, nor will their name be recorded in the Billiards Club Hall of Fame.
DO I NEED MY OWN POOL CUE TO PARTICIPATE?
No! If you have your own cue you are more than welcome to use it however if not we have plenty of cues for you to use!
CAN I USE MY OWN ACCESSORIES/EQUIPMENT?
In general, yes! If you have certain accessories such as a playing glove, breaking cue, bridge head, etc. are permitted. Personal chalk is permitted as long as it is red in color. Pool chalk, hand powder, and bridge heads are available to all players. Billiard balls including cue balls will be provided by the club. The use of personal billiard and or cue balls not approved by the club is not permitted.
WHAT IF I NEED TO LEAVE EARLY?
No problem! If you need to leave early, please inform the tournament administration desk. If you need to leave but might be able to return later, we can try to accommodate you by scheduling your next match for later. If you need to leave for the rest of the night we'll simply remove you from future match scheduling.
CAN SOMEONE ELSE PLAY FOR ME IF I NEED TO LEAVE AND COME BACK?
A subsitute may play on your behalf for a maximum of one match. Substitute players must be chosen by the player they are representing. Absent players must arrange a substitute in advance of their departure and must be declared to the tournament director. Failure to declare a substitute in advance of a match or failure to return before a second match will result in a forfeit.
